How do I compress a PDF for IRCC?

The fastest way is to re-save the PDF at a lower image quality, most of the file size in a scanned document comes from the embedded page images, not the text. A compressor built around IRCC's 4 MB limit does this automatically and stops as soon as it's under target.

Why PDFs get too big

Scanned or photographed pages are usually the culprit. A single phone photo of a bank statement can be 3-5 MB on its own, stack a few of those into one PDF and you're well past IRCC's limit before you've even started.

Three ways to compress

  1. Use a compressor with a 4 MB preset. Fastest option, and it keeps you in control of the target size.
  2. Rescan at a lower resolution. 150 DPI is plenty for text to stay legible, most scanning apps default much higher than that.
  3. Reduce photo quality before converting to PDF. If you're photographing documents with your phone, a slightly lower camera quality setting produces a much smaller file.

What you lose

Heavy compression can make small text look slightly softer. If a compressed file becomes genuinely hard to read, back off the compression a notch rather than jumping straight to the smallest possible size, legibility matters more than shaving off the last few hundred KB.

Frequently asked questions

Will compressing my PDF make it unreadable to an officer?

Not if you stop at a reasonable target. A good compressor tries the lightest compression first and only reduces quality further if it has to, if a result looks blurry, try compressing a version built from smaller source images instead.
